RecycleMania

What is your perception of RecycleMania? Is it an effective campaign in rallying students around recycling? What ways might we might improve this effort?

I have a good perception of recyclemania. I think it is really cool that there is a nation wide effort between different universities to recycle more and hopefully win the competition. I believe the campaign itself is very effective because many times students will actively get involved with something because there is a prize to be one. It makes the idea of recycling more appealing. I think one way to involve students more is to make the posters and advertising more appealing to students. That way the students are more likely to be drawn into what is going on and decide to participate. I have enjoyed this month of recylemania and I hope that UVM wins!

I think recyclemania is a great idea. The concept is perfect for college campuses. Its too bad that we need a contest to get kids to go out and recycle. You would think that at a "institute of higher education" the type of people here would be more than willing to recycle. They wouldnt even need to think about it, it would just be second nature. I think people need to be educated about recycling so that when contests like these are over, they will continue to keep recycling. I think one of the best ways to get people helping out is just simply to talk to them. People see signs and read posters, but that goes for everything, the message doesn't always stick. When someone talks to you one on one about something you are most likely going to remember it. One of my biggest goals is to educate my friends on recycling. Alot of them seem foreign to the subject. But I think that since they have been friends with me I have definatly made a huge impact on the way they view environmental issues. Hopefully I will continue to help them live a greener life.

I don't think recyclemania is the most effective way we could promote recycling. I don't think anyone who wouldn't already recycle would know about/ pay attention to the competition. People who don't care enough to protect our planet probably aren't going to get worked up about winning an eco-competion against another school when there is very little acclaim and no prize involved.
I think to really improve recycling rates we need to improve the recycling system. We need to have a recycle bin next to every trash can and the cans need to look different so the recycling is kept separate from the trash. the bottom line is that recycling needs to be made as easy as possible for people because not everyone cares enough to carry that can an extra 50 feet.

I think it's really cool that there's an effort like recyclemania at all, and that so many schools participate in it. I think the advertising has been pretty good (I liked the signs on the bus!) but one thing that would make it great would be some sort of prize. Like maybe a movie night with free pizza for the dorm that recycles the most. I dont even know whether we can measure it dorm by dorm or not, but it just seems like there needs to be a little more incentive. Or maybe daily totals posted somewhere. Something to let us know how we're doing.

I think the idea is really great and helps a lot of students to rally and recycle but I don't sense that a lot of people are overly aware of what it is and what the purpose of it is; they certainly see the posters and deduce the general idea from the name itself but I think maybe we could make a big effort to make flyers more accessible and obnoxious/flashy so kids are more tuned in. Super idea.

Recyclemania is definitally a great way to spread recycling efforts across our country. I created a UVM Recyclmania group on facebook, explaining what the competition is all about so everyone join and INVITE your friends!! I was thinking a great way to make this campaign more effective would be to collaborate with the staff at the athletic games in order to encourage fans to recycle because soooo much many bottles are thrown in the trash and sporting events here at UVM. I think if we all keep telling people to help UVM live up to their "green" image, we'll be successful!

I think recyclemania is the a great way to promote recycling! More people want to get involved when they see others doing it and it makes recycling fun! I think we can only improve our efforts by continuing to advertise and be a part of people's everyday lives. Make recycling easy- Have recycling containers everywhere, fun facts, posters and most importantly practice what you preach! This campaing catches a lot of peoples attention. People like prizes and people are competitive. It's fun and educational at the same time!! ~Carrie

Recyclemania is not as well known as it should be in terms of what it is exactly. Some e-mails were sent out about it but I dont think it encouraged people to recycle more, and people just deleted it thinking it stupid.
I think that it should start later and end when the ncaa basketball tournament ends. This is because so many people from different colleges watch it, and commercials about recyclemania could run during the basketball tournament when school pride is running high. By moving the date this might increase involvement and encourage recycling more than at the time it is now.

I think that recyclemania is great, it shows how every school does with recycling campared to other schools. I think that the schools would be more competitive if we advertised more and if there was a prize. Everyone would love to win something I'm sure!

I think that in theory recylemania is a good idea, but I really don't see anyone getting excited about it. I think more signs across campus and more incentives for students would be helpful (as many people have suggested...prizes, etc), but I also think that those should be present all the time. i think that recycling should be stressed as much as possible at all times, and not just for a competition. I think that UVM is doing better...incentives like the $0.99 coffee are really promising, and I think that more of those will help to get students to make more sustainable decisions.

I think that the idea of Recyclemania is good in theory, but it probably only seems like a cool idea to those of us who already recycle. The people on campus that want to see our school win out as being more environmentally friendly are going to want to recyle more, and the people who could care less, will probably continue to care less. Although it seems kind of sad it would have to come to this, I think offering some other sort of tangible or actual prize other than just the publicity might get students more excited about the competition. It would at least get them to start practicing good recycling habits or to realize how easy it can be!

Recyclemania is great at getting students minds thinking about recycling and maybe even other environmental issues. Making it a game can really get people excited about it. The only problem I have with it is something that probably cannot be changed. Reducing does not get rewarded on the recycling side. The less one uses the better, so the weight of the recyclables woud be less at a school where everyone has their own water bottle.
