Earth Week 2008

Describe one way that you celebrated Earth Week this year.
(I think my highlight was the seeing the happy faces chowing down on local, organic food at the ALANA breakfast...)

I celebrated Earth Week by spending lots of time outside. I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful weather that the Earth was giving us! I also was a lot more conscious of what I was eating and the amount of energy my appliances used. I tried to turn off power strips more often and eat more local and/or organic food to ensure that everyone can enjoy beautiful days for many years to come!

doing the bottle tree was definitely the main thing i did to mark earth week. I think Earth Day should be about demonstration and celebration and the bottle tree was my way of demonstrating ways that individual people can help the earth.

I've been going tray-less for a month now in the dining halls. I participated in the DC no cup day. I encountered many interesting people. That was fun. I spent time outside.

I like, Steph spent a lot of time outside and thought about the impact I was leaving on the earth. I tried to walk everywhere rather than rely on transportation, because even though the buses run on B20, they still aid in polluting our planet.

I celebrated Earth Week by stopping at the Bottle Tree on all of my tours that week (I had 3!), getting on top of my soapbox, and giving a powerful speech about how everyone on the tour should stop drinking bottled water. A lot of them were pleasantly surprised and may have been convinced enough to stop drinking bottled water, and some may continue to do so. Either way, I felt good about spreading environmental wisdom wherever I go. I also just spent a lot of my time outdoors and visiting Eco-Fair.

I started the day cooking some sweet breakfast at the Alana house. I heard the omlettes were the best thing there, I huged a tree on earth day because it was so nice out, got some free coffee at the davis center, wore tie die, and called alot of people from home to remind them.

During Earth Week, I spent a lot of time outside because the weather was gorgeousss!! The more time you spend outside, the more you bond with nature and grow a higher amount of respect for it. I also tabled at the Eco-Fair. I wish there was a lot more going on on-campus during Earth Week. UVM was totally slacking on fun eco-activities. Next year, I think Earth Week needs to be a really big thing where there are a lot of fun and educational events.

Earth week was amazing. The sky was blue and the weather was perfect!! I celebrated earth week buy having a pot luck dinner with some friends outside at the beach. Everybody brought home made or local food down and we had a cute little picnic. It was so much fun. I think earth week was not as big this year as it has been in the past (perhaps because of focus the nation). Unfortunately earth fest also kinda toppled down... I do think that students were still aware of earthweek and that the no cups in the davis center was AWESOME!

Earth Week is the same as every other week for me, as far as my behavior is concerned, but I feel like it's a nice reminder that we are sharing the same space (on Earth) with so many different lifeforms that are largely interdependent. I find that living intentionally and breaking away from the capitalist system is the best way to do the Earth a favor.

As a commitment to using less energy, I taped the light switch in my room down (off) and cut down on my personal energy consumption by unplugging nearly all my appliances (except clock) for several days.

It was a great practice and I am perpetually working towards improving my character and social behavior to live harmoniously and give back to the natural world.

Happy Summer to All!
I hope to see you all back at the planning table for our next year of education on how to create a sustainable community.

On a side note, I encourage everyone to check out a biography on Ethan Allen and explore Vermont's history more. Since I was born in PA, I am just starting to dig up all types of exciting material, and I feel like we may need to start a revolution soon to break away from imperialist America and the neo-liberal policies that destroy the very essence of our survival resources. But the first way to combat the system is to consume less and live intentionally.

Best, Colin

We were blessed during Earth Week with the most beautiful weather since last summer. My friend from England was here for the week and I showed her all around Vermont including touring the B&J factory and hiking up Stowe. At the end of her stay here she said she felt like she had a real “outdoorsy” with some of the best food she has ever eaten! We also planted a small tree downtown outside of my friend’s apartment. I felt as though I definitely took advantage of the Vermont’s natural environment and local foods that week and at the same time introduced my friend a whole different type of life.
